Water spraying under your sink, a sewer line backing up into the tub, or a water heater flooding the garage counts as an emergency. Every minute it runs, it soaks drywall, floors, and everything you own, so calling now beats mopping and hoping.
Find the main shut-off valve, usually near the front of the house or by the water meter at the curb. Turn it clockwise until it stops. That single move stops most of the damage before we even get there.
After the main is off, open a faucet on the lowest floor or outside. This drains the pressure still trapped in the pipes and slows the leak upstairs.
If water is pooling near outlets, appliances, or the electrical panel, switch off that circuit at the breaker. Don't stand in water to reach it. If you can't get there safely, stay back and tell us when we arrive.
Pull rugs, boxes, and furniture out of the water. Grab towels to steer the flow toward a drain. The faster things dry out, the less mold and warping later.

Some things can't wait until morning. A burst pipe, a sewer backup, no water in the whole house, or the smell of gas are all call-now situations. A gas smell is the one where you don't try DIY: get everyone outside, leave the door open, and call from down the street. A slow drip under the sink or a running toilet is annoying but usually fine to schedule for the next day.
